Open Captions

Open captions are designed for viewers who cannot hear the audio in a movie, while subtitles are designed for viewers who can hear, but do not understand the language being spoken in the movie.

Many cinemas are adding open captions to certain showtimes, and some local jurisdictions are beginning to require that some showtimes with open showtimes are offered.

Creating Open-Captioned Showtimes

If your cinema offers some showtimes with open captions, you can specify which ones by checking the "Open Captions?" checkbox on the Scheduler when creating a showtime (it is next to the Sold Out? checkbox near the bottom of the showtime editor).

When the Open Captions? checkbox is enabled on a showtime, on your website:

  • an "OC" badge will be displayed next to the time in the showtime's button
  • there will be a note and "OC" badge above the seat map for that showtime, if it has reserved seating
  • there will be a note and "OC" badge on the checkout form

Creating a Page Listing All Open-Captioned Showtimes

The Upcoming Shows template has an option to show all your showtimes with open captions. To use it:

  1. In your dashboard, Go to Pages > Add New
  2. In the Page Options box on the right sidebar, choose Template: Upcoming Shows
  3. Save as Draft or Publish the page (it won't appear on your website until you add it to a menu)
  4. In the Options box that appears below the content, choose "Only Open-Captioned Showtimes"
  5. Save or Publish the Page

View the page, and ensure it is showing your open-captioned showtimes. Optionally link to it from another page on your site, or add it to one of your site menus (under Appearance > Menus).
